Free-Range Writing Women’s Circles
“A woman needs — an embracing, open-armed space where she can — remember herself.”
— Sue Monk Kidd

Free-Range Writing circles are a writing space for attention, truth, and becoming. A place to write your way back to yourself and toward each other.
What is Free-Range Writing?
Free-Range Writing is a timed, generative writing practice rooted in Wild Writing™ — a tradition developed over 30 years by author and teacher Laurie Wagner. It belongs to a lineage that includes Julia Cameron’s morning pages, Natalie Goldberg’s writing practice, and the broader world of expressive and automatic writing.
Here’s what makes it work: we write as fast as we can, for 15 minutes, pen never leaving the page. By writing quickly, we outrun the inner critic — the voice that edits, second-guesses, and keeps us trapped in trying to look good. What arrives instead is something truer. Something we didn’t know we were carrying.
This is not your high school English class. There are no grades, no right answers, and no pressure to write well, though we may end up writing ourselves well.
Wild Writing™ is a registered trademark of Laurie Wagner.
How the Circles Work
Each session begins with a poem. I read it aloud, then offer a line as a writing prompt — a jump-off line that sends us inward. We write for 15 minutes, pen moving, no stopping. Then we go around the circle, and each woman shares what she wrote while the others practice silent, generous listening. No feedback. No critique. Just witnessing.
We do this two or three times each session. Each round tends to go deeper than the last.
This campfire-style sharing is where the real magic happens. Reading your words aloud gives them more power. Many women find that hearing their own voice on the page, and having it received without judgment, loosens something that’s been held tight for a long time.
The practice is simple. What happens when we gather is anything but.
Just honest writing, shared discovery, and the kind of support that emerges when women gather around a table and tell the truth.
A Glimpse Inside Our Writing Circles
In our Free-Range Writing circles, participants explore their voice and share pieces of their own writing. Here, Tamera shares reflections and a piece from a recent session.
These Circles Are for You If:
You don’t need to be a writer to be here. You just need to be a woman with something to say.
- You’re facing a difficult challenge — loss, grief, illness, loneliness — and want a space to explore what you’re carrying without being fixed or advised
- You’re in transition: new parenthood, empty nest, divorce, career reset, a diagnosis — and are trying to find your new bearings
- You feel called to write but can’t seem to get started, and you’re looking for structure, community, and a reason to show up
- You’re working on a specific writing project and want a practice that helps you get beneath the surface of what you’re trying to say
- You yearn to belong to an intentional community that values honesty and authenticity
- You want to write a book someday and aren’t sure where to begin
Whatever brought you here, Free-Range Writing circles will help you find yourself and your people.
Like witches in a coven mixing a brew, we gather — in person or online — each bringing our unique ingredients to the cauldron: our lives, our stories, our grief, our hopes. We can’t mix the brew without you.

Drop-In Writing Circles
Not ready for a full series? There are always lighter ways to step into the practice: pop-up salons, one-off writing gatherings, and The Write Fit, a roaming monthly writing salon in San Francisco. No commitment, no prerequisites, no pressure to be good.
In-Person Writing Circles: San Francisco
There’s something ineffable about gathering around a table, sitting elbow to elbow, and writing together in the same room.
In-person circles happen in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area approximately every two months. Space is intimate and intentionally small. If you’ve been waiting for this, this is your sign to get on the list.
Want to bring a circle to your neighborhood, your workplace, your sangha, or your living room? I create custom in-person experiences for groups of all kinds. Email me and let’s make something happen.
Returning Writers
If you’ve been part of a circle before, you’ll always have early access to future series. This work is designed to be returned to, not completed.
Some women come once. Many return in different seasons. Others move between the seasonal circles, drop-ins, and private sessions depending on what’s alive for them. There’s always a place to come back to.
The Deepening Pathway
Looking for more? The Deepening Pathway combines a seasonal circle with private 1:1 sessions with me. For women who want to dive deeper, make headway on a personal writing project, and benefit from personalized coaching. You get to determine the focus of our time together.

Testimonials
Here’s what women say about the circles:
“A diagnosis can alter your life down to your cells. Meesha’s class offers a gift to her students. A space to be honest, a place to unload a burden that no one else needs to hold, and an opportunity to meet creative friends who will move with you past the cliche, “You are not alone.” Free-Range Writing encourages you to tap into parts of yourself you didn’t realize were there, giving you genuine strength. If you stumble into the opportunity to write with Meesha, say yes, and you will transform.
– Jenny, elementary school teacher
“Meesha’s Free Range Writing Circle is truly a gift. I went into the class with the intention of just practicing my writing and figured it would help motivate me to get words on paper each week, the class provided that incentive and more. Meesha’s calm guidance helps each participant reach deep into our heart and write what is really on our minds. The circle felt intimate and supportive (even over Zoom). The process of writing, reading and having witness to my words helped to heal parts of me I didn’t even know existed. We all cried at least once, we laughed at the little things in life and I really came away with a sense of accomplishment for getting my story onto paper. Who knew 1.5 hours a week of writing furiously, pen to paper, could really transform my perspective on life.”
— Kelsey, urban watershed planner
“Joining Meesha’s Free-Range Writing circle has been a powerful experience. She creates a safe, non-judgmental space for women to explore the beauty, magic and melancholy of anything and everything that comes up when we write deeply from our souls. I always leave our sessions spent but lighter, and with a bit more insight into myself.”
– Kristine, creative director
“Meesha’s Free-Range Writing circles allow me to drop into feelings and thoughts and put them on the page with no fear or concern about whether what I write is good enough. When I hear other participants share their short pieces I am touched by their vulnerability and it gives me permission to fully express myself.”
– Lauren, PainterDancer, artist, and creative facilitator
“I am so grateful to have found Meesha’s Free-Range Writing Circle! My journey in her sessions has been one of discovery and growth. I went in thinking about myself one way and uncovered new and fascinating things that I had not expected to think or feel. To be in the company of other brilliant and generous members has been a blessing. I appreciate the safe space to share and explore my thoughts, feelings, and dreams. I am making Free-Range part of my self-care regimen.”
– Molly, analyst
“Meesha is a talented leader whose kindness and care will help you know yourself more deeply. She creates a supportive and generous space that allows you to be vulnerable and show up as you are. ”
– Dayna, author
“This was totally out of my comfort zone and I’m so glad I did it. I had an emotional release that I did not know I needed. Unfortunately, this morning I found out that my CEA jumped quite a bit after my short stint dancing with NED. I feel compelled to get the journal out and continue writing. Thank you for providing me with and encouraging this new outlet. My resistance to writing is generally due to my perfectionism so the Free-Range Writing was liberating. Meesha, thank you so much.
– Samantha, patient
